Cryptocurrencies - the future of technology and finance or a threat and financial pyramid?


The very first debate of the Economy and Entrepreneurship Debate Club was held on 21st February 2018 at the National Chamber of Commerce in Warsaw. Our guests, i.e. dr Artur Bartoszewicz (Warsaw School of Ecnomics), Filip Pawczyński (Polskie Stowarzyszenie Bitcoin), prof. Krzysztof Piech (Łazarski School) and Piotr Schramm (attorney) talked about cryptocurrencies in terms of the required technology, threats and possibilities involved in digital assets trading. Wojciech Szeląg of Polsat Television moderated the debate. The meeting was organized by MISO and Komitet Dialogu Społecznego of the National Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Orange Polska, as our partner.

As per the usual agenda of MISO-organized debates, our guests presented their general view of cryptocurrencies and technology involved, focusing largely on their role in modern economy, but also certain threats associated with cryptocurrency trading. Then, the attendees had their chance to voice their concerns and ask the difficult questions.

During the debate we also discussed the following issues:

  1. cryptocurrencies trading regulations in the EU, specifically considering the freedom of movement of capital;

  2. practical aspects of global functioning of cryptocurrencies;

  3. questions concerning energy use and the use of cryptocurrencies by national banks to generate profit;

  4. considerable difference in value at the Korean stock exchange;

  5. bank policies towards the users of cryptocurrencies stock exchange;

  6. blockchain technology as an element of daily life (re. shares and securities trading);

  7. assumptions and views regarding blockchain technology and its perspectives for the future;

  8. cryptocurrencies and state monopoly regarding the production of money.
