Between 10th – 12th December 2012 the members of the International Institute of the Civil Society took part in an academic conference called „How do we define our community”. It was organized within the frames of a program „Academia in Public Discourse Poland-Russia” initiated and conducted by the Foundation “Institute Artes Liberales” and the “Artes Liberales” Faculty of the University of Warsaw.

During the first day the participants debated on the civil society, the main issues determining the Polish and Russian communities and also the concept of the national identity. The participants of the conference also debated on the role of the Eastern Orthodox Church in Russia and the role of Roman-Catholic Church in Poland.

During the second day the participants debated on the ways to define academic community. During discussion panels and workshops several topics were discussed.

The last day of the conference was concentrated on the relations between politics and academic communities. The influence of academic communities on the decision making process from Polish and Russian perspective was given consideration, as well as the forms and ways of academic community participation in the political life: independence vs dependence; intellectuals and scientists vs politics making decisions; democratic countries vs autocratic countries.

Mateusz Komorowski, the President of IICS took part in a discussion panel summarizing the debate.  He congratulated the organizers on the choice of topics which in his opinion was extremely important, interesting and current. He also pointed out a very interesting set of lecturers taking part in the discussion panels and the issues they gave consideration to.

Komorowski also indicated that the project „Academia in Public Discourse” was special because it brought together exceptional personalities from Poland and Russia, as far as i.a. science, politics, media or non-government organizations were concerned. It was a platform for a dialogue, sincere discussions, the exchange of opinions and the improvement of understanding, so greatly needed nowadays in the Polish - Russian relations.
