The Conference: "Pandemic as Cultural and Media Phenomenon"

The International Institute of Civil Society has assumed honorary patronage of the Poznań Congress of Young Scientists. This year the Congress will be organized remotely, and the conferences will be held on three dates: June 11-12, July 16-17, September 10-11, 2021. We invite you to the second event entitled "Pandemic as Cultural and Media Phenomenon".

The Poznań Congress of Young Scientists (formerly the Congress of Scientific Circles) is an annual event held at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. It provides a forum for the discussion of the most important current problems of the Polish and the world science. The event attracts about 300 active participants and numerous listeners every year.


Three conferences will be organized as part of the Poznań Congress of Young Scientists. The second event entitled "Pandemic as Cultural and Media Phenomenon" will be held on July 16-17 in remote form on the ClickMeeting platform.


The theme of the conference covers a wide spectrum of the phenomenon of pandemic in the cultural space and media in historical terms, and in the perspective of contemporary experience. The event is intended to enable an analysis of the issue on many levels and create a space for interdisciplinary discussion from the perspective of various scientific fields. In particular, representatives of the broadly understood humanities, social sciences, cultural studies and media sciences are invited to participate in the conference.


The final program of the conference divided into panels will depend on the subject matter of the submitted papers. Topics of the conference include, among others, problems such as:

 

The pandemic motif in fine arts and literature

 

  • Motif of mass disease in painting

  • Visions of epidemics in literature - from the Athenian plague to the Ebola disease

  • The Polish experience of the epidemic in Ambrozewicz's  novel the Plague

  • Pandemic as a motif of horror literature

  • The plague as a theme of poetry - Juliusz Słowacki's Father of the Plagued, Adam Mickiewicz's  Alpuhara Ballad

  • Painting’s perspective as an account of a pandemic reality

  • Plague in movie images

  • Isolation as a film motif


Pandemic from cultural perspective:

 

  • Epidemic in video games - virus, zombies and post-apocalyptic reality

  • Image of a pandemic in serials (Pandemic, Survivors, Hot Zone, Virus, Quarantine, etc.)

  • Do pandemic, epidemic, plague always have to mean a disease? On linguistic dimensions of words

  • Is a pandemic the God’s punishment? On the meaning of the plague from a religious perspective

We kindly inform you that applications for the Conference are accepted by the organizers until July 1, 2021, through a registration form available at the link.


The conference fee is 90 PLN, which includes organizational issues and covers the cost of publishing a scientific monograph. Articles will be scored from MEiN  (ministry of education and science) second position (20 points per chapter).


Students of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań are exempt from the fee.
