INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE CONFERENCE IN SIBERIA


Between 19th -26th August 2013 members of the International Institute of the Civil Society took part in an international science conference under the title: “Siberia – the burden of the past, the challenges of the future”. The debate was organized as a part of an international project called „Academia in Public Discourse Poland - Russia” initiated and conducted by the Foundation “Instytut Artes Liberales” and the Faculty “Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw. Buryat state University in Ulan –Ude was a partner of the conference.

 

Main topics of the particular sessions were as follows:

  1. Siberia – global and local perspective.
  2. Siberia – strategic perspective.
  3. Siberia – ecological perspective.
  4. Poles and Siberia – colonizers or the victims of the empire?
  5. The past as a burden or a resource to take advantage of?
  6. The future as a threat or as a challenge?
  7. Buryatia as a colonial experience – tradition and modernization

The participants of the conference visited i.a. Ethnographic Museum, where they debated about creating common memory of the primary nation groups and ethnic groups constituting the society of the Republic of Buryatia and Siberia. The visit was an amazing opportunity to visit also the Soviet Square in Ulan – Ude. The conference was an extraordinary opportunity to carry out interesting discussions concerning main topics of the conference and also many informal conversations.
