The role of legal protection in civil society

On 23rd March 2016, the 4th meeting of the Civil Society Debate Club was held. The meeting’s topic was the role of legal protection in civil society and our guests for the evening were Dariusz Zawistowski (the Chairman of the National Council of the Judiciary), attorney Andrzej Zwara (the Chairman of the Supreme Bar of Attorneys), as well as legal advisor Włodzimierz Chróścik (the Dean of the District Bar of Legal Advisors, Warsaw).

During the fourth meeting of the club we talked about securing the rights and freedoms of people via the rule of law in modern democracies. Specifically, the role of the Constitutional Tribunal was discussed along with that of the Commissioner for Human Rights in Poland. We then switched focus to the part the National Council of the Judiciary had to play in terms of its impact on the formation of civil society in Poland, as well as the condition of Polish courts and judges with special emphasis on their independence. Finally, our guests also presented their respective opinions on the quality of public prosecutors and the nation’s general knowledge of law.

The Civil Society Debate Club is a project that we launched together with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Poland back in 2015. It is meant as means of communication for the young leaders of NGOs, think tanks, business, culture and science, politics, administration and the media. The Club is a platform for interesting discussions with special inspiring guests, deeply engaged in civil society and its meaning. Through this initiative, we hope to promote the idea of civil society and increasing social and civil awareness of the Polish society.
