The role of the media in creation of the civil society

On 24th February 2016, the 3rd meeting of the Civil Society Debate Club was held with the participation of our special guests: Maciej Orłoś and Konrad Piasecki. This time, our main topic was the role of the media in creation of the civil society.

The Civil Society Debate Club is a project that we launched together with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Poland back in 2015. It is meant as means of communication for the young leaders of NGOs, think tanks, business, culture and science, politics, administration and the media. The Club is a platform for interesting discussions with special inspiring guests, deeply engaged in civil society and its meaning. Through this initiative, we hope to promote the idea of civil society and increasing social and civil awareness of the Polish society.

During our third meeting we discussed the evolution of the media and new technologies (used by the media) in Poland and the general picture of contemporary democracies in terms of the impact that the media had on them. We also talked about the influence of the media on politics and the media being the fourth power (so called fourth estate) and the comparison between the nationwide and local media and their respective roles. Finally, we also looked at the media’s independence and reliability as well as its general mission.

During our meetings, the attendees always have a chance to ask their own questions, so don’t miss out on another opportunity and join us at the next civil society debate, soon.
