U.S. ELECTIONS AND THE MEDIA

On 21st October 2016 the 3rd Polish-American seminar regarding the U.S. Elections and the Media (Discover America series) was held in the newly opened American Center Warsaw. Our Special Guest was Luis Costa Ribas – American correspondent of a private TV station (SIC) with 35-yrs of experience in journalism. The meeting was co-organized by the International Institute of the Civil Society, the Embassy of the US in Poland and the American Center Warsaw.

During the discussion, our guest underlined the importance of this year’s presidential elections in the US mentioning the great interest in presidential debates (candidate debates) shown by the American public, as well as the ever growing concerns centred on the fight between the candidates. Also the specifics of the American political system such as bipartisanship, indirect voting (Electoral College) were mentioned and explained to the meeting’s participants.

The second part of the meeting was dedicated to answering questions of the attendees. These were largely related to the growth of populism all across the globe, the generally harsh tone of political debates (specifically with regard to the presidential elections in the US) and the growing tendency towards mercantilism in international relations.
