MISO BREAKFAST WITH DEPUTY SPEAKER OF THE SENATE OF THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND RAFAŁ GRUPIŃSKI

On November 14, 2024, the “MISO Breakfast” was held at the seat of the International Institute of Civil Society, with the participation of Deputy Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Poland Rafal Grupinski.

The event brought together numerous members of the MISO community, representatives of NGOs, representatives of business and academia. The meeting was opened and moderated by Mateusz Komorowski, Founder and President of MISO.

During the “MISO Breakfast” Deputy Speaker Grupinski raised a number of important issues concerning the development of civil society, the role of education in a democratic state under the rule of law, and contemporary political challenges, both at the national and international levels. He emphasized that one of the key elements in strengthening democracy and building social cohesion is the active participation of citizens in public life, based on knowledge, involvement and informed decision-making.

Grupinski noted that one of the key challenges of modern societies is overcoming barriers resulting from differences in educational levels. In his view, civic education, which develops the ability to think critically and analyze information, is the foundation for shaping responsible citizens who actively participate in society. As he pointed out: “Civic education is the key to building a society that understands its rights and responsibilities, can discuss ideas and respond to changing realities.”

The deputy speaker noted the need for civic education to return to the mainstream education system, because it is essential for building national consciousness and a sense of community. He stressed that education not only strengthens the national identity, but also builds a sense of responsibility for the common good and the community, which is crucial for the proper functioning of democracy. Grupinski noted that in times of rapid digital development and easy access to information, the ability to verify data and make informed decisions is absolutely essential.

He also discussed international challenges, stressing the need to adapt policies to the dynamic changes in the European Union and in relations with other countries. He stressed the importance of international cooperation and confidence-building, which will enable Poland to respond effectively to the challenges of globalization, social and technological changes. “Poland must skillfully move within the European Union and internationally to ensure stability and development in a dynamically changing world.” - he concluded.

In conclusion, Deputy Speaker Grupinski noted the need to strengthen civic cooperation and the role of education in shaping democratic institutions in Poland. He stressed that a strong, informed and engaged civil society is the foundation of responsible politics, adding that only joint action by citizens, institutions and politicians can ensure Poland's future based on democratic values. “We must act with determination to defend what is most precious - our democracy, culture and future,” he concluded.

The meeting ended with a lively discussion, during which participants had the opportunity to ask questions and share their insights.
