EUMANS CONGRESS 2022 IN WARSAW
The congress was attended - onsite and online - by more than 100 participants from different parts of the world. Opening speeches at the event were given by Marco Cappato (EUMANS chairman, political activist) and Virginia Fiume (EUMANS coordinator), among others, and the speakers included Prof. Renata Mieńkowska-Norkiene (chairwoman of the MISO Program Council), Bogdan Połowko (co-founder and former board member of Razom in Ukraine), Avy Candeli (creative director of Associazione Luca Coscioni), Marta Lempart (founder of the All-Poland Women's Strike), Ben Cope (Ukrainian House in Warsaw), Isabella De Gregorio (President of Eduxo) and Klaus Sambor (originator of the European Citizens' Initiative for Unconditional Basic Income).
On the first day of the Congress, March 11, panel discussions focused on issues including the protection of democracy and the rule of law, civil rights and freedoms in the EU, LGBTQI+ identity and the creation of a pan-European citizens' movement. In their speeches the speakers also referred to the ongoing war in Ukraine, condemning Russia's brutal aggression.
On the second day of the Congress, March 12, there were thematic panels on: protection of civil rights (especially the right to education); social, environmental and economic sustainability; and some aspects of direct democracy.
Prof. Renata Mieńkowska-Norkiene (chairwoman of the MISO Program Council), in her speech entitled “How Warsaw became the capital of (European) civil society resistance against sovereignists and prohibitionists. And why a citizens congress matters,” highlighted, among other things, problems involving democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights in Poland and Europe (the entire speech can be viewed at the link: click).
The EUMANS Congress at the Copernicus Science Center ended with a General Debate, which summarized the event in Warsaw in the form of conclusions and recommendations. Among other things, the attention was drawn to the main goal of EUMANS, namely “to fix the still existing democratic deficit of the EU by strengthening the role of EU citizens and the European Parliament.”
EUMANS and MISO declared their willingness to continue working together to promote ideas of civil society, foster civic attitudes and work together to increase citizens’ involvement in the public and economic life of the EU.
