POLISH-U.S. BUSINESS BREAKFAST - "SMART CITIES AND DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION"

On 26 September 2023, the International Institute of Civil Society hosted a Polish-U.S. Business Breakfast, entitled "Smart Cities and Digital Transformation". The event was organised by MISO and the US Embassy in Poland and moderated by Dr Albert Tomaszewski, Assistant Professor in the Department of Strategic Management at the Warsaw School of Economics.

The keynote speaker was Dr Jeannice Fairrer Samani - executive leader in new technology, information technology, strategic business integration management and global speaker on leadership and technology. The event was attended by representatives of Polish and foreign technology companies, including startups, industry business organisations and members of the MISO community.

In the first part of the meeting, the assembled guests had an opportunity to listen to Dr Samani's presentation on the smart city concept. The speaker shared her experience of applying smart city technologies in various sectors - from public transport and traffic management to healthcare and local community development.

As Dr Samani stressed, it is largely up to governments whether regulations to use smart cities are to be implemented. She added that a new era in regulating technology is coming. Regulatory policies are being created that not all smart city users are fully aware of, she said, adding that in the US, work is currently underway to regulate data collection.

In the second part of the meeting, a discussion was held on global solutions. According to the participants of the meeting, there are no simple answers to the questions that arose - how to get to the end, i.e. realising smart cities technology on a large scale. According to Jeannice Fairrer Samani and the participants in the discussion, the most important questions that need to be answered today are the following:

  • Who owns the data?
  • Where do they come from and where do they go?
  • How are they stored?

As summarised, the smart city technology is an excellent tool, but a lot depends on it being used in the right way, i.e. in accordance with the regulations in force.

The speaker concluded the meeting with the punchline: "Let's continue to create and develop new technologies” and thanked the attendees for an exciting meeting. She conveyed that she was impressed by the people involved in the discussion: from cybersecurity specialists to blockchain institutions, who brought many interesting threads to the discussion.
