POLISH-U.S. CIVIL SOCIETY ROUNDTABLES - “INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM”
The keynote speaker (online) was Azmat Khan, Pulitzer Prize winner for 2022, investigative journalist for the New York Times and New York Times Magazine.
The speaker shared her experiences and methods, regarding her work as an investigative reporter. She spoke to the MISO attendees, about, among other things, the importance of collecting materials (including building a press release database), using open sources information and witness accounts (digital witness).
Azmat Khan cited many facts and stories from her work as a reporter and showed materials collected during her investigations, including poignant photos of civilians survived in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. She stressed that whenever she had doubts arising from conversations with her information sources, she always tried to dispel them during talks with civilians. She also spoke about the importance of journalists' cooperation with watchdog NGOs. She mentioned Airwars, which monitors armed conflicts in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia and Yemen, among others.
The Pulitzer Prize winner also talked about opportunities for reporters in the United States to obtain funding for their work, including gaining funds for their investigations, such as from grants and programs for journalists, for example, the Democracy Fund and Open Society Foundations, among others. She also mentioned organizations that provide assistance to reporters across the world, including, for example, Reporters Without Borders, who offered her free legal assistance in one of her lawsuits.
Azmat Khan answered questions from attendees at the meeting, including about perceptions of her work in the public space or ways to raise funds for her investigations.
“Polish-U.S. Civil Society Roundtables” is a project implemented by the International Institute of Civil Society and the U.S. Embassy in Poland. These are cyclical meetings with the participation of American experts, in a roundtable format, on the development of civil society in selected thematic areas. The aim of the project is to exchange Polish and American experiences in improving civic competence and developing civil society, with a particular focus on human rights, disinformation, media freedom, fundraising, and diversity and tolerance - depending on the topic of a given meeting. The format of each meeting includes an online speech by an American expert who presents the American perspective to the Polish audience gathered at MISO headquarters. After the speech, the moderator opens a discussion focused on sharing experiences and best practices (with the participation of an US expert). The project is intended for NGO and civil society leaders, lawyers, representatives of public administration, business and academia.
