MISO BREAKFAST WITH JACEK KARNOWSKI, THE MAYOR OF SOPOT
The meeting discussed, among other things, local government, politics, young people, civil society, NGOs and social movements, and the upcoming electoral cycle, including, in particular, the 2023 parliamentary elections.
President Karnowski, who is a very experienced local government official, talked about the recent history of self-government in Poland, including the evolution of local government institutions, their legal and social conditions, as well as the current problems and challenges of local government.
The Mayor of Sopot stressed the importance of the functioning of local governments in Poland. - It is local governments that play an important role in the daily lives of Poles. Let's look, for example, at the actions taken by local governments after the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Sopot is a city that, already during the Donbas crisis in 2015, assisted in the adaptation programme for Ukrainians of Polish origin, provided them with social housing and mediated their employment. This was also the case in February 2022, when Sopot once again provided support to refugees from Ukraine - he recounted.
The guest of the meeting gave several examples of initiatives taken by the city of Sopot to promote the idea of civil society. - The creation of the civic budget in Sopot in 2011, as the first city in Poland, was an undoubted success. This year, the citizens of Sopot have more than PLN 2.5 million at their disposal, which they can allocate to the initiatives of their choice - Jacek Karnowski remarked.
The Youth City Council has been active in Sopot for several years and has got a small but “own budget” at its disposal. The Mayor of Sopot emphasised that from the very beginning young people have approached the spending of this money very maturely and responsibly. - One of their first decisions after the Youth Council received their “own budget” was to allocate the money for the psychological care of their peers - he said.
Mayor Karnowski also pointed out that in relationships with the city's residents, of vital importance is to be ready and open to talk to them, to be able to listen to them attentively and to encourage them to co-decide on important local issues. - In Sopot, public consultations are held regularly, and voter turnout is always very high - he added.
During the meeting, Jacek Karnowski also presented the participants of the "MISO Breakfast" with the ideas and main postulates of the Local Government Movement "Yes! For Poland", which he chairs. He pointed out, above all, the harmonious development of Polish municipalities, districts and voivodeships, the promotion of the idea of self-government, the cooperation of local government circles, the implementation of the provisions of the Polish Constitution and the strengthening of civil society. - One of the reasons for the creation of the Movement was the protest of self-government authorities all over Poland against marginalisation and limiting the competences of self-governments by the current central authorities - the speaker said.
At the end of the meeting, Jacek Karnowski shared with the participants of the MISO Breakfast his plans for the upcoming election cycle, presented his electoral forecasts and answered numerous questions.
